Permits in Whitfield County

The property owner applies for the permit. Which office you call depends on whether your land is inside a city's limits. Check with them before you order; we help you match the building to their answers.

Worth asking here

  • Whitfield County, Dalton and Varnell share one zoning ordinance. Ask which district your land is in and what it allows for an accessory or business building.
  • For a shop or warehouse you'll run a business from, say so up front. Commercial buildings usually have more steps than a home garage.

For the full list of questions, check your ZIP below or print them with the Site & permit packet.

Whitfield County Building Inspection (opens in a new tab)

It enforces City of Dalton and Whitfield County building and zoning rules, and posts the Tunnel Hill permit application too.

Varnell, Cohutta

Your city hall

Ask the city which office handles permits at your address.

Getting your site ready

Whitfield is ridge-and-valley country at the southern end of the Appalachians. Dalton spreads across the valley up to Rocky Face Ridge, the railroad tunnels through Chetoogeta Ridge at Tunnel Hill, and I-75 runs the length of the county.

Valley ground can be soft after rain, so firm up the route for a truck pulling a 30' to 36' trailer, and plan on a level pad: within 3" across the footprint. Larger commercial buildings usually go on concrete.
