Buildings that fit Cherokee County

Plenty of Cherokee farms keep horses, and a barn with enclosed lean-tos for stalls and a raised center aisle suits them. Tall-door garages fit a boat headed to Allatoona, and two-bay shops fit the bigger lots up north.

Permits in Cherokee County

The property owner applies for the permit. Which office you call depends on whether your land is inside a city's limits. Check with them before you order; we help you match the building to their answers.

Worth asking here

  • The county's accessory building form asks for a photo of your house and says the building's outside should be compatible with the main house. Ask how that applies to steel siding, and whether a color or trim choice helps. You can match colors in the designer.
  • Ask where on the lot an accessory building may go. The county's zoning FAQ covers garages and sheds in front yards.
  • Each city has its own zoning, so the answers inside Canton, Ball Ground or Woodstock can differ from the county's.

Getting your site ready

The south end of the county runs into Woodstock and Lake Allatoona. The north end, past Ball Ground and Waleska toward Free Home, rises into the foothills, with Bear Mountain the highest point. That's where most of the open land, pastures and long driveways are.

Wherever you are, the site needs to be level within 3" across the footprint, and the delivery truck pulls a 30' to 36' trailer. In a subdivision, check the street turn and any gate before install day.
