Buildings that fit Pickens County

Most of the county's farm income comes from poultry and livestock, with cattle, horses and hay on smaller places around Talking Rock and Marble Hill. That's barn and equipment-cover country. Closer to Jasper, it's two-car garages and shops.

Every building is made to order, so any of these can change size, doors and colors. Shop all buildings

Permits in Pickens County

The property owner applies for the permit. Which office you call depends on whether your land is inside a city's limits. Check with them before you order; we help you match the building to their answers.

Worth asking here

  • In Big Canoe or Bent Tree, start with the community's own approval for outbuildings, then the county.
  • Ask Planning & Development which permit type a detached garage or barn falls under, and what they need with the application.

For the full list of questions, check your ZIP below or print them with the Site & permit packet.

Nelson

City of Nelson

Nelson sits partly in Cherokee County. Ask city hall which office handles your address.

Getting your site ready

Pickens is where the mountains start: Jasper calls itself the First Mountain City, I-575 ends just south of town, and Sharp Top and Mount Oglethorpe rise in the east of the county. Plenty of lots here sit on a slope or at the end of a long gravel drive.

Two things to settle early. The site needs to be level within 3" across the footprint, so a hillside spot usually means grading or a concrete pad first. And the delivery truck pulls a 30' to 36' trailer, so check tight switchbacks, low branches and soft shoulders on the way in. Tell us about either when you ask for a price.
