Width is the end with the peak. Leg height is measured to where the roof starts.

How a barn is laid out

Every barn is a center building with a lower, single-slope lean-to on one or both sides. Each part is sized and enclosed on its own.

  • Raised center

    The tallest part, with the main roll-up door on the end. Size it for your aisle, tractor or hay equipment.

  • Lean-tos

    6' to 15' wide on each side, with legs lower than the center. Use them for stalls, storage or open equipment bays.

  • Open or enclosed

    Enclose the center and leave the lean-tos open, or close everything in. You choose each side separately.

What will it sit on?

Open buildings can go on concrete, asphalt, gravel or level ground. Each surface uses a different anchor, and every one needs to be level within 3". Enclosed buildings do best on a concrete pad.

    One at each leg, within 6" of the leg and at least 3" from the slab edge. Most installers want the pad 6" larger than the frame, 4" thick at 2,500 PSI.

How is a barn's size measured?

The width is the whole building: the center plus both lean-tos. A 44' barn is usually a 20' center with a 12' lean-to on each side. Length runs front to back, and height is the center's leg height.

Can I have just one lean-to?

Yes. Turn either lean-to off in step 4 of the designer. The build sheet updates the frame, anchors and pad for you.

Does a barn need a concrete pad?

No. Barns can sit on concrete, asphalt, gravel or level ground, and each uses its own anchors. Enclosed areas stay drier on concrete.

Do I need a permit?

Many counties require one, especially for enclosed buildings. We check your county's requirements before you pay a deposit and can provide certified drawings for your permit application.
