Buildings that fit Gilmer County

Ellijay is Georgia's Apple Capital, and the county's farms also raise poultry and cattle, so open-bay equipment barns earn their keep here. Carters Lake is a Corps lake with no private docks, so boats live on trailers at home, and a simple cover keeps the sun off between trips.

Permits in Gilmer County

The property owner applies for the permit. Which office you call depends on whether your land is inside a city's limits. Check with them before you order; we help you match the building to their answers.

Worth asking here

  • Gilmer has mountain protection districts on high, steep ground. If your land is up high, ask whether it's in one and what that changes.
  • The county says to get the building permit before any construction or excavation, so ask before you grade the pad.

For the full list of questions, check your ZIP below or print them with the Site & permit packet.

Getting your site ready

Ellijay sits where the Ellijay and Cartecay rivers meet to form the Coosawattee, with GA-515 running through East Ellijay and the Blue Ridge all around. A lot of land here is either river bottom or a hillside cabin lot.

On a slope, plan on grading or a concrete pad: the site needs to be level within 3" across the footprint. On a gravel mountain road, check that a truck pulling a 30' to 36' trailer can make the turns. Remote places and busy seasons can take longer than our usual 8 to 10 weeks.
