Buildings that fit Murray County

Poultry is the county's biggest farm business, with plenty of cattle and hay alongside it, and the carpet industry is the main employer. That means equipment barns on the farms, and shop or warehouse space for the trades.

Permits in Murray County

The property owner applies for the permit. Which office you call depends on whether your land is inside a city's limits. Check with them before you order; we help you match the building to their answers.

Worth asking here

  • Murray County has had zoning since 2003. If the barn is for animals, ask about your zoning district: the county's FAQ says farm animals depend on it.
  • Storage buildings can't be used as a home under the county's residential code, so describe what the building is for when you apply.

For the full list of questions, check your ZIP below or print them with the Site & permit packet.

Getting your site ready

The east side of Murray climbs into the Cohutta Mountains and Fort Mountain, much of it national forest and wilderness. The west side is valley farmland along US-411 and US-76 around Chatsworth, Eton and Spring Place.

Valley ground can be soft after rain, so firm up the route for a truck pulling a 30' to 36' trailer, and plan on a level pad: within 3" across the footprint. Mountain lots on the east side usually need grading first.
